I Never Promised You A Rose Garden (1977)

Additional Information

Additional Information
Warner Brothers in the late 70s and early 80s had the ugliest looking and flimsiest of vhs big box cover art. With a hideous green background and cheap cardboard cases that creased easily, very few ive seen are pristine. Usually rather than the poster art , the cover consisted of a still. Warner Home Video made up for this later with nice slip cover boxes with original poster art on nearly every release.

I NEVER PROMISED YOU A ROSE GARDEN garnered an Oscar nomination for its Screenplay in 1977. But it deserved another one for Kathleen Quinlans extraordinary performamce . It was a very competitive year for actresses in 1977 with Shirley Maclaine & Anne Bancroft for THE TURNING POINT; Jane Fonda for JULIA; Marsha Mason for THE GOODBYE GIRL and winner Diane Keaton for ANNIE HALL all giving terrific performances. Perhaps if the Oscars had a drama and comedy category like the Golden Globes(of which Quinlan received a Drama nomination) she may have snuck in. But with the Academy also leaving out Diane Keaton for LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR and Shelley Duvall for THREE WOMEN among others, its understandable.

Trivia: Although its a sincere, nicely made movie on its own, producer Roger Corman-known for copying popular movie would not have picked this uip for distribution if another film hadnt been a blockbuster at theaters. What was that film? Kathleen Quinlan did eventually get an Oscar nomination in a Supporting category for which film? What does that film have in common with 4 of this years Best Picture nominees?
