Antony and Cleopatra (1973)
Additional Information
Additional Information
Charleton Heston directed, wrote, and starred in this adaptation of Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, a historical drama that attempts to bring an epic visual style to the Bard's original stage play. The story concerns Marc Antony's attempts to rule Rome while maintaining a relationship with the queen of Egypt (Hildegarde Neil), which began while Antony was still married. Now he is being forced to marry the sister of his Roman co-leader, and soon the conflict leads to war.
Antony and Cleopatra is a 1972 film adaptation of the play of the same name by William Shakespeare made by the Rank Organisation. It was directed by Charlton Heston and produced by Peter Snell from a screenplay by Federico De Urrutia and the director.[1]
The film stars Charlton Heston and Hildegarde Neil in the title roles, with Eric Porter, Roger Delgado, John Castle, Fernando Rey, Carmen Sevilla, Freddie Jones and Douglas Wilmer. The film received poor reviews[2] and, as a consequence, a very limited release in the USA. It was released on DVD in March 2011.[3]
Heston had played Mark Antony in two other Shakespearean films - the 1970 film, Julius Caesar, also produced by Peter Snell, and a 1950 film, Julius Caesar.
